Increase to Immigration Health Surcharge Announced

Increase to Immigration Health Surcharge Announced

Wednesday 17th October 2018

From December 2018 the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) may double under plans put before Parliament on 11 October 2018. This is still subject to the Parliamentary approval.

Anyone in the UK on a work, study or family visa for longer than 6 months can access NHS services in the same way as UK citizens if the IHS is paid. The IHS may increase from £200 to £400 per year for non-EU nationals. Students and those on the Youth Mobility Scheme will have a discounted rate of £300 per year.

The change is driven by the fact that the NHS is estimated to spend £470 on average per person per year on treating those required to pay the surcharge.

Permanent residents will still not be required to pay the surcharge, as well as certain vulnerable groups such as asylum seekers and modern slavery victims.

Short-term migrants, including those on visitor visas, are generally charged for secondary care treatment by the NHS at the point of access.
