How AI is transforming the legal industry: insights from Liliya Scott

Wednesday 29th March 2023

During our recent interview with Kommersant, Liliya Scott, Partner of LS Legal Solicitors and a Solicitor of the High Courts of England and Wales, shared her thoughts on the revolutionary potential of ChatGPT. As a specialist in immigration law, our law firm is currently testing ChatGPT to automate its internal processes.

When asked about the hype surrounding ChatGPT, Liliya acknowledged the potential for the technology to become a legal game-changer if it is effectively integrated into business processes as a paralegal. While ChatGPT cannot replace the logic and expertise of a lawyer built on years of experience and personal skills, it can offer invaluable support in formulating advice, drafting letters to clients, and executing simple legal processes, such as an initial consultation.

Liliya emphasised that ChatGPT's potential needs to be expanded, and it cannot replace a human lawyer's flexible thinking and experience. However, she believes that with further development and practical implementation, ChatGPT could revolutionise the legal industry.

As an expert in the field of immigration law, Liliya Scott recognises that the legal profession is experiencing a paradigm shift with the advent of new technologies. She views ChatGPT as an innovative tool that can augment lawyers' abilities, allowing them to become more efficient and productive in their work.

Liliya Scott believes that while technology cannot replace the experience and flexibility of a human lawyer, it can offer significant support in specific legal procedures. With further development and refinement, ChatGPT could transform the legal industry and provide innovative solutions to complex legal issues.

Neural networks can bring significant advantages to businesses by streamlining communication processes and optimising response times. The use of ChatGPT in a legal context, for example, allows for quick and efficient handling of client requests.

When a client calls in with a request, ChatGPT can be utilised to create a draft response that is then sent to a lawyer for review. The lawyer's review of the draft response ensures that it is accurate and that all legal requirements are met before sending it to the client. This system allows for quick and accurate responses to clients, saving valuable time and ensuring that the client's needs are met on time.

ChatGPT's ability to provide concise and useful information ensures that lawyers can quickly and accurately provide clients with the necessary information. Furthermore, ChatGPT can also generate the first draft of legal advice. This saves significant time for lawyers who need to respond quickly to clients with specific legal terms or advice.

Using neural networks like ChatGPT can significantly benefit businesses by improving communication processes, reducing response times, and increasing the efficiency of legal workflows. This technology is invaluable when time is of the essence and quick, accurate responses are necessary. By utilising ChatGPT, businesses can ensure that they provide their clients with the best possible service and stay ahead of the competition.

The question is whether the advent of neural networks will cause significant upheaval and restructuring of the labour market, particularly within the legal industry. Liliya's response is that while ChatGPT, an AI-powered conversational platform, can improve efficiency and streamline administrative tasks for lawyers and their support staff, it is unlikely to displace legal professionals altogether.

The legal field is complex, and some nuances and intricacies require a human touch. The law is not just a set of rules to be applied mechanically; it also involves interpretation, judgment, and discretion. While AI can assist lawyers in conducting research, generating legal documents, and performing routine tasks, it cannot replace the insight and creativity of a human lawyer.

Therefore, the legal industry as a whole is not at risk from the introduction of AI. Instead, we see AI as a tool that can augment lawyers' abilities and enable them to provide better service to their clients. For example, ChatGPT can help clients get quick answers to common legal questions, freeing up lawyers' time for more complex tasks. As AI technology continues to improve, it may even be possible to use ChatGPT to provide legal services at a lower cost without sacrificing quality.

Overall, the legal industry will remain an essential part of society, even as technology evolves. While AI will undoubtedly play a growing role in the legal profession, it is unlikely to replace human lawyers entirely. Instead, AI will be a valuable tool that enhances the capabilities of lawyers and enables them to provide more efficient and effective service to their clients.
