Life in the UK: Confirming Your Foreign Degree in the UK

Monday 19th June 2023

Confirming your diploma in the UK as a newcomer can be a straightforward process, but it is crucial for some professionals to be able to work in their chosen careers in the UK. For doctors, it is necessary to register with the General Medical Council (GMC); for other professionals, it might be required to register with their respective professional bodies.

To confirm your diploma, you must provide your original certificates, transcripts, and other relevant documents to the appropriate body. In some cases, the professional body may ask for a qualification assessment from an authorised assessment agency such as ENIC (NARIC in the past).

Once your qualifications are confirmed, you may be asked to complete a period of supervised practice and sit an assessment, depending on the profession. This is to ensure that you meet the required standards to practice in the UK.

In addition, it is essential to keep your professional registration up to date and maintain your continuing professional development by completing regular training and development activities.

If you are a doctor, you can register with the GMC by completing an online application, providing original qualifications and identity documents, and paying a fee. The GMC will then thoroughly assess your qualifications and training to ensure that you meet their standards for medical practice in the UK.

For other professions, you can check the professional body relevant to your field, for example, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) for nurses and midwives or the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) for various health and care professionals.

We would love to hear from you about your experience confirming your university degree from another country in the UK.

Have you gone through the process? What was it like? Let us know in the comments.
