Important notice for people with pre-settled status issued under the EU Settlement Scheme

Important notice for people with pre-settled status issued under the EU Settlement Scheme

Tuesday 12th September 2023

🆕 From September 2023, the UK Home Office will automatically extend the Pre-Settled Status of those who have yet to obtain Settled Status by the time their Pre-Settled Status expires. Pre-Settled Status will now be automatically extended by two years upon expiry and linked to a person's digital status.

Notification of the extension will be given by the Home Office.

📝 The Home Office will further aim to grant Settled Status automatically to those who have continuously resided in the UK for five years. A number of background checks will be carried out by the Home Office to ensure that settled status is not granted in error.

📅 Pre-Settled Status holders interested in British Citizenship should check their online accounts after five years from entry to the UK to see if they have been upgraded to Settled Status automatically. If not, they should apply for Settled Status.

🔗 Employers should continue to request right-to-work share codes from Pre-Settled Status holders as their expiry dates approach, even if their status is extended automatically. Employers must update their records with the new expiry date every two years.
