Immigration Changes Affecting Students: What You Must Know

Immigration Changes Affecting Students: What You Must Know

Thursday 14th September 2023

The UK government has recently announced significant changes to the immigration rules that will impact students and their dependants. Here's everything you need to know:

Dependants: Starting from 1 January 2024, international students applying for a student visa will only be allowed to bring their dependents to the UK if they fall into the following categories:

• Government-sponsored students
• Students pursuing a PhD, doctoral qualification, or a research-based higher degree

Switching to Work Routes: As of 17 July 2023, students will not be allowed to switch to work routes until they have completed their courses. However, there is a noteworthy exception for degree-level or above students studying at educational institutions with a strong compliance track record as sponsors. These students can apply to switch onto sponsored work routes before completing their studies, provided their job start date is after the course completion date.

Important Dates: Remember that the changes in relation to dependants will apply to student visa applications starting on or after 1 January 2024. The changes in relation to switching to work routes became effective on 17 July 2023.

Employer Considerations: Employers planning to hire international students should know the students' course completion dates before determining the employment start date and issuing the certificate of sponsorship.

Let's Embrace These Changes Together: While these changes may bring some adjustments, please feel free to get in touch to discuss alternative immigration paths that might be available for your family members to come with you to the UK.
