Tier 2 Shortage Occupation List

Tier 2 Shortage Occupation List

Tuesday 12th November 2019

What are the changes in the Shortage of Occupation list and what does it mean for you?
Changes to Shortage of Occupation List:
The shortage of occupation list (SOL) has been expanded to help employers to hire skilled workers from the international countries to come and work in the United Kingdom.

The SOL has been expanded to include occupations like web designers, veterinarians, architects and skilled chefs, which were not included in the previous SOL. There are various other occupations listed on SOL which are as follows:-
• Biological Scientists and Biochemists
• Physical Scientists (Engineering Geologist, Hydrogeologist, Geophysicist, Geochemist, technical services manager in the decommissioning and waste areas of the nuclear industry, senior resource geologist and staff geologist in the mining sector)
• Civil Engineers
• Mechanical Engineers
• Electrical Engineers
• Electronics Engineers
• Design and Development Engineers
• Production and Process Engineers
• Engineering professionals
• IT Business Analysts, Architects and Systems Designers
• Programmers and Software Development Professionals
• Web design and development professionals
• Information Technology and Communications professionals
• Medical Practitioners
• Psychologists
• Veterinarians
• Medical Radiographers
• Occupational Therapists
• Speech and Language Therapists
• Nurses
• Secondary Education Teaching professionals
• Actuaries, economists and statisticians
• Architects
• Quantity Surveyors
• Social Workers
• Quality control and planning engineers
• Paramedics
• Artist
• Dancers and Choreographers
• Musicians
• Arts Officers, producers and directors
• Graphic Designers
• Welding Trades (high integrity pipe welder where the job requires three or more years related on the-job experience)
• Chefs (limited roles)

What this means for you and your sponsor?
The changes to SOL mean that an individual applying in the occupations on the new SOL will have a higher chance of obtaining a Tier 2 visa than those coming to the United Kingdom for occupations not listed on SOL.
On the other hand, the employers will no longer need to carry out a Resident Labour Market Test if the job is already listed on SOL. This saves time for the employers to advertise the job and it also means that Certificate of Sponsorship for the occupations listed on SOL will be given preference.

What can go wrong?
It is possible that the government can make changes to SOL as the Immigration Rules are always changing. This means that the Home Office can add, remove or amend the occupations listed on SOL.
