When a Mortgage Becomes a Prison: The Reality of Financial Abuse

When a Mortgage Becomes a Prison: The Reality of Financial Abuse

Monday 14th October 2024

💔 Women are being trapped in “mortgage abuse traps” by domestic abusers, leaving them struggling to survive. A new report by Surviving Economic Abuse shows that 1 in 8 women in the UK with joint mortgages have experienced economic abuse by a current or former partner. Many are left with crushing debt, unable to leave unsafe homes or even afford basic necessities like food and clothing.

🏠 Sarah’s story is a tragic example of this crisis. Her ex-husband stopped contributing to their joint mortgage and blocked all attempts to sell the property. For over a decade, Sarah has been forced into financial hardship, using food banks and skipping heating to keep up with payments.

💬 Our Family Law expert, Stella Marat, draws attention to this growing issue. If you're in a similar situation or have a joint mortgage and are considering divorce, please reach out to us for support and advice.
