BritCard: A Vision for a Smarter, Fairer UK Identity System
Monday 23rd June 2025
The UK government is considering the introduction of BritCard, a national digital identity system that would provide proof of legal residence and work status to everyone with the right to be in the country, including British citizens and legal migrants.
Unlike physical documents that can be lost or forged, the BritCard would live securely on a user’s smartphone, offering instant verification for employers, landlords, and public services. The system would simplify identity checks, reduce wrongful refusals, and make it easier for people to access support they are entitled to.
This digital solution could also help the government enforce immigration rules more efficiently, while protecting the privacy and rights of those it serves. BritCard is not just a policy idea, it is a step toward greater clarity, dignity, and inclusion for all residents of the UK.
